Chania Neoria – Tourist Place in Greece
Athens 2004 Olympic Games Pin
Chania is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit.
During the Venetian domination (1204-1669), the need for fuller presence of Venetian navy in Crete obliged Venice to build shipyards (arsenali), where the ships were repaired during the winter.
During the Turkish occupation the lack of maintenance of the port and the degradation of its role contributed to abandon the initial use of shipyards and converted mainly into military warehouses. From large complex of 17 shipyards gradually demolished nine. Today survives a group of 7 continuous domes and one further west, the Grand Arsenal (now the Mediterranean Architecture Centre). From the establishment of the Moro are preserved intact both, at the head of the harbor.
