They were considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry, song-lyrics, and myths that were related orally for centuries in these ancient cultures. They were later adopted by the Romans as a part of their pantheon.

Their names are: Clio, Erato, Urania, Calliope, Euterpe, Melpomene, Thalia, Terpsichore, Polyhymnia.

Erato Muse is one of the Greek Muses. The name would mean “desired” or “lovely”, if derived from the same root as Eros. Erato Muse is the Muse of lyric poetry, especially romantic and erotic poetry.
