Athens 2004 Olympic Games Pin
Cycling has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics, at which a road race and five track events were held. Mountain bike racing entered the Olympic programme in 1996, followed by BMX racing in 2008. All events are speed races – there is no BMX freestyle or dirt jumping for example.
Women’s cycling did not enter the Olympic programme until the road race at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Women have competed in track events as well since 1988. The 2012 Summer Olympics were the first at which men and women competed in the same number of events in all cycling disciplines including track cycling, which previously had more men’s and fewer women’s events than the 2012 programme. However, women have shorter distances for some events.
Cycling at the 2004 Summer Olympics consisted of 18 events in three disciplines:
- Road cycling, held at the Athens historic centre (start and finish at Kotzia Square, for the road race events) and in Vouliagmeni Olympic Centre (for the time trial events).
- Track cycling, held at the Olympic Velodrome.
- Mountain biking, held at the Parnitha Olympic Mountain Bike Venue.
In total, 464 cyclists participated: these consisted of 334 men and 130 women, from 61 countries. The youngest participant was Ignatas Konovalovas, at 18 years, while the oldest was Jeannie Longo, at 45 years. The most successful contestant was Bradley Wiggins, who won three medals: one gold, one silver and one bronze.
